Welcome to Go Hapuna! This site is dedicated to providing all the information you need about Hapuna Beach State Park. Hapuna is located on the Big Island of Hawaii, on the Kohala coast on the west side of the island. The beach has over a quarter mile of beautiful, soft white sand that attracts tourists and locals alike. The water is clear and warm, and popular activities include snorkeling, bodyboarding, and skimboarding. For directions to the park go here.
The park is open from 7 AM to 8 PM daily, and offers showers, restrooms, and plenty of free parking. There are pavilions for picnicking and hosting parties, or plenty of open space for sun bathing. Lifeguards patrol the southern half of the beach from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM daily.
Hapuna’s location on the Kohala coast ensures that the beach has sunny weather for most of the year. Still, the best conditions are traditionally found in the morning, from sunrise until midday when the water is smooth and glassy, the air is still, and before the crowds arrive. Conditions can quickly change later in the day as the wind picks up and the water gets choppy.
Hapuna’s best waves come in the winter months, and these west swells create great conditions for bodyboarding and bodysurfing. The waves are powerful and they break in shallow water. Always be cautious and aware of the ocean.
